Rain from thunderstorms is spotty. It may drench one area and bypass another a mile away. It may storm for several hours over one acre and end up by dropping less than two inches of rain.

Sperryville weather watcher Dennis Wingfield says precipitation in his area totaled 2.91 inches during the 18 days of August, compared to 3.68 inches by that time last year. So, despite the occasional brief thunderstorms, that part of the county at least is .77 inches behind last year’s level of rainfall.

Wingfield added that the overall temperature^ in August were five degrees warmer than last year based on his figures for the first 18 days.

Carbaugh says this year’s potato crop along the eastern shore is an especially good example of what spotty weather conditions can do to agriculture. Cool, wet weather delayed planting in the spring while hot, dry w eather during the summer cut expected yields by 50 percent.

With similar conditions persisting in Rappahannock County, farmers and gardeners can only wait to see what the political and climatological future will bring.
