Phil Irwin of Flint Hill would really rather talk about his hobby than his job. But then his hobby has been in the family a lot longer. When Irwin chose a career direction that led to his present position with the Voice of America he broke with a family tradition that started back in the early 1830s.
A new invention set the stage coach on wheels and ran it along tracks at incredible speeds. One of the first trains in America, named after the then governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton, actually looked like a series of stage coaches being pulled by a steam engine. Around 1831, Irwin’s ever-so-great grandfather was in the Hudson River Valley helping to lay the tracks. Now Irwin has a replica of that 1831 DeWitt Clinton in his collection of model trains spanning the intervening generations of his father’s side of the family and the transportation changes his forebearers saw.
