Like the coal miner, the baker and the mechanic, the miller was marked by his occupation. “Look at all that meal on him,” Mrs. Nethers remarked about the picture of her father-in-law snapped after a day’s work.
“I’ve ground many a bushel of meal myself,” Nelson Nethers reminded her. One of eight children, Nelson helped his father out at different times. He demonstrated a scoop, shortened by at least half from years of scooping out meal. The miller had fashioned a comfortable tool from what appears to be pine, with holes cut for thumb and fingers, a design that probably cut down on callouses worn by hundreds and hundreds of scoops.
