Peaches are also suffering some moisture stress and although the quality is reported good, the sizing of the fruit is slowed. There were good yields of hay early in the year, but pasture condition is now reported relatively poor and supplemental feeding of hay is becoming more common, especially in the Piedmont area, according to Carbaugh.
State officals added that the weather is said to have caused a ten percent loss in tobacco yields this year. Peanuts remained in good condition at mid-August, but adequate rainfall through August and September would be needed to produce near normal yields.
Some areas of the state are reporting a 50-to-60 percent loss in corn due weather caused stress at a critical grain development stage.
One of the frustrating aspects of this year’s weather has been the unreliable source of precipitation— thunderstorms. Continuous hot weather causes electrical storms when it does rain because of sudden teamperature changes in the clouds.
