Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson is up in arms over the failure of Hollywood movie makers to include the city of Winchester in the shooting schedule of a new film for television on the life of George Washington.
“When the press reported recently that a television film was being made in Virginia about the early life of George Washington, folks in Winchester perked up,” said congressman Robinson in his latest newsletter. “Mr. Washington, after all, was based in Winchester for ten years during his early manhood. From that location, he received his military training fighting Indians on Virginia’s frontier. He received initiation into the art of government by virtue of having been first elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses from a seat in Winchester.
“We like to think his experiences in our part of Virginia helped to mold him well for the role he was destined to play as America’s first great leader. So it has been a disappointment to learn that no filming is to be done in Winchester in connection with the production of this television miniseries for CBS.”
Well, Mr. Robinson, we here in Washington, Virginia, are disappointed too, disappointed that our town isn’t on the filming schedule and disappointed that you didn’t plead our cause along with that of your home town.
