After all, the average American doesn’t think “George Washington” when they hear “Winchester.” He may have made your area his base for ten years but he surveyed our town when he was just 17. It might even have been his first big job. He named our streets, the same names they bear today, a$er the first families in the neighborhood (reserving Gay Street to honor his secret love, the beauty of the lowlands, Gay Fairfax, according to local legend). He danced, dined and slept at Washington House on Main Street, visited friends in the mountains here and even wanted Washington as capital of the new nation years later, again according to local lore.
We are the first Washington of them all and besides, our town is much more photogenic and picturesque than Winchester. Mr. Robinson notes that he and former U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. and other civic minded citizens are working to change the minds of the film moguls. The Congressman maintains that a movie on George Washington without scenes from Winchester will be like an Apple Blossom Festival without any blossom.
Well, a movie on the Father of our Country without scenes from the first Washington of them all would be like an Apple Blossom Festival without flowers, fruit and trees.
