Public hearings will be held on September 15th at 1 p.m. in the Manassas Courthouse Annex and at 7 p.m. at the Charlottesville City Council chambers to receive comment on hazardous waste disposal in Virginia. These are the two nearest of nine such public hearings set statewide.
Solid Waste Commission executive director Barbara Wrenn says the commission has been reviewing hazardous waste disposal procedures in other states for approximate / 1V-* years in order to form recommendations for the General Assembly. A January deadline is set for the report.
Wrenn says the commission’s proposal — and the topic of the September public hearings — will be to create a state siting board. This board, consisting of representatives from both environmental and manufacturing interests, would select the best site in the state to construct a waste disposal facility.
