Then Ross sets about selecting the cars he will take with him to his first meeting of the Fauquier Model Railroaders club. The members live in counties from Rappahannock to Prince William. They are building a huge layout in the old Southern Railroad station at The Plains and already have track in place to run their trains. Of about a dozen regular attendees, Ross will certainly 1h* the youngest.

Just before leaving the basement, Phil Irwin takes off his father’s old conductor’s cap. Ross stays behind agonizing over the decision of which train to take to The Plains. He seems to have inherited the interest of his ancestors.

He'll be wearing his grandfather’s cap before long.
