Wrenn added that “the hard part is that the state can over-ride the landowners.” She says everyone wants a disposal site in the state, but not in their backyard. According to Wrenn, environmentalists would like a site where they could monitor it; manufacturers want one nearby because it costs so much to store and ship wastes.
According to solid waste commission statistics, more than 110,000 tons of hazardous waste are generated annually in Virginia as a result of various industrial processes. (They do not include any radioactive wastes.) Since no commercial facilities exist in Virginia to dispose of these chemicals, they must be stored until enough accumulate for an out-of-state shipment.
