Unable to beat the popular red-head, WOLF filled that time-slot with the special interest programming that few people would listen to anyway. The rest of the day held something for everyone, things like a Guy Lombardo and big band show or a country mu-j sic request show. The latter was the format of Irwin’s first big break. It happened to him the way it does to the heros in Hollywood backstage movies. The regular announcer was sick. Irwin was answering phone requests and made an audition tape. The next day he was behind the mike taking his first air shift.
Country music may seem a little alien for a spot like Syracuse, New York, but Irwin says it held “a natural appeal” because Syracuse is “a working man’s town.”
He likes all kinds of music, but says he had an immediate affinity for “the uncomplicated manner in which country music tells a story. It’s easy to listen to. It reflects real life.”
