My great-aunt Carrie’s homemaking book, Household Discoveries: An Encyclopedia of Practical Recipes and Processes (copywrite 1908), had many practical methods of ridding the house of fleas.

This tome recommends something called Persian insect powder, petroleum products, eucalyptus oil, oil of the pennyroyal or sassafras, or the leaves of pennyroyal or camomile flowers and hot soap suds (Aunt Carrie’s book also includes recipes for the soap) for their eradication.
