The miller at Nethers in the 'twenties and thirties was William Clifton ("Tip ") Nethers remembered by his children as a hard-working man who liked his job.
This contentment is evident in this photograph snapped by an early park employee out gathering local color (top). It was labeled by the park simply "a miller at Nethers".
The wheel there (left middle) is one of the best preserved in the county, partly because of the preservation efforts of Worden Robinson, who uses the mill as a pottery making shed and studio and runs a bed and breakfast operation and trout farm at Nethers. Nethers had two big wheels, one to grind feed and the other to grind corn (right top).
Like most of the small neighborhood mills. Nethers was not set up for the more complicated operation of producing white flour. The miller stocked biscuit flour from Fletcher's mill outside of Sperryville. The road past the mill ends at the park and in early days was the path to some of the area’s most colorful mountain hollow settlements middle).
