Farmers brought it in, already shelled, in sacks, and sometimes departed with sacks of meal, sugar and yeast. Some, suspecting they were watched, asked William and young Nelson to leave large sacks of sugar and ground corn under the porch where they would be picked up late at night. And some of these same people bought sacks of rye flour as well. Folks back in the hollows made rye whiskey as well as sour mash, and even those distilling corn whiskey used a rye and water paste to form a vapor lock at the top of their jugs.
