February statistics from the Culpeper office of the Virginia Employment Commission showed an increase in people entering the labor force. When some of these people were unable to find work there was a rise in the unemployment rate in Orange and Madison.
However, Rappahannock remained one of the better working climates in the five county area, bettered only by Fauquier. In Fauquier the unemployment rate for February was 3.7 patent. In Rappahannock, it was 5.5 percent.
Progressively the rate was six percent in Culpeper, 6.6 percent in Orange and 6.7 percent in Madison.
These figures compare to a state average of 5.4 percent for February, 8.4 percent nationally.
The Culpeper office also reported there were 1,540 unemployment insurance recipients in March compared to 3,160 during the same month last year.
