“One of our main goals will be to help growers with direct marketing,” explained T Reynolds, an organizer of Rappahannock’s newest agricultural venture, a Small Farmers’ Market scheduled to open Memorial Day at the Ice House in Washington.
“The key to this thing is going to be providing variety and consistency so people can depend on having good foods available at reasonable prices,” said Lyt Wood, chairman of the marketing group.
Current plans call for the Rappahannock Small Farmers’ Market to be open Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. In addition, members will have the option of joining in a cooperative effort to truck produce to other area markets on weekdays. “We’ll share the work and the expense of hauling and selling,” Reynolds said.
To date, the Small Farmers’ Market has 12 members: Wood, Reynolds, Greg Foster, Bob and Jackie Wellemeyer, Diane and James Wood, Chris Bird, Mary Jane Cappello, Miriam Harris and Frank Reynolds. “We’ve got growers of all kinds of vegetables plus apples and fruit and members who will supply honey, fresh baked bread and pastries, jams and jellies, eggs, flowers and even beef,” the chairman said. “We’re not necessarily limiting ourselves to organic, natural produce but we’re looking real hard at the quality of what we will offer. And organic produce will definitely be available.”
