Accompanists Bill Abernathy and Barbara Sherman helped keep the show moving at a brisk pace.
There were two minor weaknesses in the show. The musical numbers were so strong that scenes in between seemed slow and drawn-out by comparison. Either the pacing could be picked up or some of the dialogue cut.
The other flaw was competition between the student actors. Theater is above all a blend with other people. It’s unfortunate when some of the strongest performers want to stay center stage all the time. Basic acting rules get violated. For instance, it’s bad manners to walk around during somebody else’s ballad. When somebody forgets his lines, the cast works together as a group to rescue the scene. Everyone uses the same energy level with no one sticking out because of bigger and exaggerated gestures.
For theater is a synthesis of the creative efforts of many working together. Each must enhance the others. Amateur theater is an attempt to learn how to do this. Most of the time “Where I’m Cornin’ From” succeeds in this goal exceedingly well.
Delevitt assembled a strong cast and a number of outstanding artists in other fields and mounted an energetic and entertaining production.
