It all started in 1964 when Dorothy Davis made a dried flower centerpiece for a Thanksgiving dinner at Trinity Episcopal Church. They sold the centerpiece for $3 after the dinner.
And so the next year she made three centerpieces. This tripled the money she was able to raise for the church.
In 1967 the county's first house tour was sponsored by the historic association to celebrate the Jamestown Exhibition. That was the year Flossie Williamson got involved in the churchwomen’s dried flower sale. Dotsie wanted to show how flowers and herbs were dried during Colonial times, Flossie remembers. So Flossie dressed in her grandmother’s dress and took 301 people up to her attic. There she demonstrated the tricks of her trade.
