If asked myself, I would have to answer, truthfully and with sorrow, that in this county it is no longer a question of the school children getting a “quality” education or, even, an education, period. It has now become a question of whether, for the general student body, we are graduating illiterates unable to read and write their own language or to handle minimal and necessary computations. It has now become a question of whether we are going to focus our attention and public financing on basketball and entertainment or on the fundamental and basic education of the children.
There is no point in asking, “Who’s to blame?” We all are. Some'.for not doing their public duty and others for allowing this to happen.
Blame for what? For condemning a generation: igf young people to ttMton ignorance. That’s what! I’m sorry to say that the word and fact of accountability are almost forgotten in this county. My suggestion to our elected governing body is that we use this affair of the “Basketball Superdome” to commence restoring accountability in Rappahannock County, not only in the public school system, but throughout all departments of local government. And that the already precarious fiscal posture of the county is not going to be further endangered by any more “Hobson’s choices."
