DURING THE FIRST weekend
of April in I960, Senator Raymond Guest had brought Bing Crosby to Front Royal to preside over the dedication of the “Bing Crosby Stadium”, a 97 unit parade and a special matinee of his latest movie “Riding High.” Rappahannock citizens were invited to participate in the festivities.
According to Senator Benjamin T. Pitts of Fredericksburg, president of the Pitts Theatre Corporation, the promotion was planned to encourage healthful recreation for youngsters and to sponsor sports among young people.
Fifty Rappahannock children were among 550 area youngsters invited to see “Riding High” in Front Royal. Two school buses would take the children to the theater. They were to be furnished free lunches enroute. Gene Wagner, Annie Cooke and Mary Banks were in charge of the trip and would supervise the children.
Mrs. H.C. Warwick was county chairman of the annual cancer fund drive. The volunteers urged that everyone “give liberally to fight the cancer monster.”
In adopting the new budget, county supervisors set the tax levy at $2 for every district except Piedmont which had an additional 15* for bonds.
