Democrats finally have a candidate for the 7th Congressional District seat.
Francis H. Fife, former mayor of Charlottesville, announced Tuesday he will seek the Democratic nomination in the 7th District.
Also, Aruthur W. Arundel of The Plains is considering a bid for the Democratic nomination. Mr. Arundel is publisher of The Rappahannock News and four other weekly newspapers in Northern Virginia.
Six Republicans seek their party’s nomination for the seat Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson will vacate at year’s end. But those originally regarded as the likely Democratic candidates — Del. Alson H. Smith Jr. of Frederick County and Charlottesville Mayor Frank Buck — opted last month not to run.
Mr. Fife, 63, is a vicepresident and trust officer with Sovran Bank of Virginia. He was a member of the Charlottesville City Council, 1970-78, and served as mayor, 1972-74.
