Rappahannock’s flood plain to be defined by soil type. In addition, state and local Health Department tests indicated that wells in the Sperryville area were contaminated with fecal coliform from septic tank drain fields located in flood plain type soil. This unhealthful condition coupled with the direct discharge of sewage into the Thornton River were leading factors in the effort started in 1968 by the Water and Sewer Authority to obtain a sewer system for Sperryville. This sewer system should be operating within a few years if all goes well during construction.
The soil types listed above have characteristics which make them unfavorable for home foundations, home basements, or for septic tank drain fields or privies, lawns or shrubs. They are either shallow over bed rock, have slow internal drainage or high water tables in the subsoil. They also may have expanding clays in the subsoil, occupy hilly, steep, or very steep slopes or rocky and stony areas that make buildings infeasible or almost impossible.
