land subject to flooding, the greater the potential for loss. Flood plains are the natural spillways for the overflow from streams during periods of prolonged and heavy rainfall. Obstacles placed in these natural spillways, such as buildings, road Alls, or bridge abutments, tend to slow flood flow and cause water to back up to higher levels than it would reach in a natural unobstructed flood plain.
It is important to know where the flood plains are so that new buildings will not be built where there is danger of damage from flood waters. In Rappahannock County the larger areas of flood plain soils are along the Hughes, Thornton, Hazel, Covington and Jordan Rivers. The soil survey maps of the county delineate the flood plains as being made up of different kinds of alluvial soils. Together, these soil types total 7605 acres, or 4.2 percent of the total land area of the county.
