J.R. Latham, who recently toured the elementary school with the School Board. “The thing that concerns us is that it stays fixed.”
Estabrook said he had found after checking with other school divisions facing the same problems with leaky roofs that “unfortunately, there’s no totally satisfactory answer to flat roofs.”
Addressing the option of adding a sloped roof at the elementary school, the superintendent reported that, according to the architects, „ the building doesnot have the structural capability to withstand the extra weight. “Also a pitched roof would be considerably more expensive,” he said.
Supervisor Nelson Lane asked if the pitch could be raised enough for water to drain off by packing the ceiling with insulation or blowing in styrofoam under the repair membrane.
“An inch rise for 20 feet would get that water off there. After a rain, the water just stands,” Estes added.
“My understanding is that the original roof had a slight incline. . . That capability was built in,” Estabrook countered.
“It may have settled,” replied Gilkey.
