Who should undertake this tedious task? We suggest that the board investigate the possibilities offered through the county’s summer youth employment program. The program’s organizers are always looking for supervised job sites that offer meaningful work for young people. If one, maybe two, capable teenagers could be found - and there are plenty of capable teenagers in the employment program - and Clerk Diane Bruce is willing to oversee the young people, then the county could get the research done at no cost.
There is a precedent for this approach. Several years ago, a teenager from Huntly undertook a similar project for the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection. Over the summer Eva Dahlgren poured over county records, digging out the subdivisions approved in past years. Her work gave local government a clear picture of exactly where Rappahannock stood in terms of what already had been developed.
