“Corns can be permanently cured”
Very few people realize the process involved in the formation of a corn. Many people come into a doctor's office with a request to have the corn removed. They do not understand that the problem is not in the skin alone. Depending on the location of a com, we may see a toe or a bony prominence changing ever so slightly in shape. This change can bring about a skin reaction to protect itself from too much pressure. The top layer of the skin (epidermis) begins to produce a material called keratin. This is the actual corn. It becomes so thick and hard that it sets up an inflammatory reaction around itself, and we feel pain.
The treatments for a com can include the removal of rthe prominence beneath the com with a minor procedure, adjustment of foot gear, or periodic care to reduce the amount of keratin (usually in the elderly or for mild lesions). All are relatively pain free procedures.
