Magistrates lor Kappanannock County were appointed on April 1 by the chief circuit court judge to serve for four years. Fran Eldred, a magistrate since 1977, was also named the 20th district chief magistrate and will supervise all magistrates in Rappahannock, Fauquier and Loudoun counties. The other Rappahannock magistrate, Dieter Knuepfer, was appointed for the first time.
Magistrates are trained to issue search warrants, arrest warrants, subpoenas and summonses. They also allow bail or commit people to jail and perform various other duties such as providing information on the judicial system.
Magistrates are not connected with law enforcement. They serve as a buffer between law enforcement and society.
