O’Bannon attributes much of the increased business activity to the anticipation of a sewage system. “Sperryville is a nice, little town that needs a sewage system to grow.” But he also worries about the plant, fearing that maintenance of it will cause endless headaches. Like everybody else, he hopes the system will run smoothly. “The one (sewage plant) we get will be the only one we’ll ever have because it’s all we can afford. ”
O’Bannon had other prescriptions for the town’s health, such as attracting more restaurants and motels. “I’m always turning people to Luray or Madison.” He would like to see more growth in Sperryville, which he called “the business center of the county.”
Martin and Cheri Woodard, owners of Faith Mountain Herbs and Antiques in Sperryville, are optimistic about the town’s future. In an interview, Mr. Woodard said there was an undercurrent of excitement and expectation throughout the town. He noted two significant ways in which businesses were working together to promote Sperryville: 1) through cooperative advertising and 2) by stressing Sperryville in ads rather than just a particular business.
Mr. Woodard also thought the commitment to build a sewage system had improved the town’s image. He said the plant will wipe away a blemish caused by the stigma of dumping sewage into the Thornton River.
