Paul received a medical discharge from the army in 1971. He was offered two missionary positions in Africa and Israel, but he declined both in favor of going to Singapore to try for a job with an oil company. Cuc-i stayed in Vietnam while Paul went job hunting.
“Some friends had told me that the oil business was picking up, and there were a lot of oil companies in Singapore,” Paul said. Paul’s first job was in Saudi Arabia, but he stayed for only three months. “The Saudis were extremists and very strict about their rules,” Paul said.
Some of the punishments for breaking Saudi rules included cutting off the hand of anyone caught stealing and beating any foreign man who looked at a Saudi woman. “They told me that I would never be allowed to bring my wife into the country, and that was the last straw,” Paul said.
After another brief job in Kuwait, Paul returned to Singapore to try with other oil companies. “That time in Singapore involved taking around my resume to the companies, and then playing the waiting game,” Paul said.
