The test area will be 150 acres which is being invaded by the gypsy moth. The first application will be on three 50-acre plots, followed by a second application seven days later.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether an early application of the virus will control the gypsy moth for a period of several years. The results will provide state agencies and researchers with additional information on the effectiveness of the virus.
The test plots will be evaluated later this year, and for the next two years, to determine to what extent the virus is continuing to exert control over the population.
A series of similar tests will be conducted in Maryland concurrently with the test planned for Virginia.
