The backbone of Sperryville is tourism, and so one of the council’s main goals is to attract visitors. “We want to project an image that will make people want to come out and spend a day or a couple of hours in Sperryville,” Swindler said. “We want to promote Sperryville as a quiet, interesting town where they’re are lots of little shops. ”
Another of the council’s goals is to attract more people during the winter season. “Sperryville is a very busy place eight to nine months out of the year,” Swindler said. “The other three are slow.”
The prospect of a sewage treat ment plant in Sperryville bolsters feelings that the town is on the upswing. Those interviewed generally agreed that the sewage plant, due for completion in about two years, has already boosted property values and spurred business expansion.
The town’s commitment to build the plant has lifted a severe restraint to development. Sewage needs to go somewhere, and in Sperryville it has traditionally gone into the Thornton River. But disposal into that river is now illegal. So without a plant a business is very limited in what it can do with its sewage.
