“Many a farmer has added a special crop or two to appeal to customers,” Bell said. They select these special crops by watching the produce section of the supermarkets to see what is available there and by reading current food articles to see what the trends are.

Marketing also involves making your products special, said Bell, who is a member of the faculty of Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Offer not just fresh vegetables, but information on how to cook and store the produce, he said. Or offer a tour of the farm, a ride in a hay wagon for children, or demonstrations of old time farming activities. These enjoyable experiences are part of appeal to customers, too.
