Space in a newspaper or magazine now is determined by what is perceived as the readers’ interest in the subject. “As a newsman, I rate the significance of an article as equal to or more important than the interest,” Platt said. “In my day, the significance was what was important.”
Besides his knowledge of journalism, Platt knows about journalists, and how the public’s conceptions of the group are wrong in many instances. To the charges that journalists are arrogant and cynical about everything, Platt allows that reporters seem arrogant at times, but that cynicism is not the right word to describe a reporter’s attitude.
“A journalist can’t believe everything he or she is told, but there is a difference between being skeptical and cynical,” Platt said. “If the reporter isn’t skeptical about everything he is told, then he becomes simply a secretary taking down what the person wants to say and that’s not a news person.”
