With two out Chucky Jenkins walked. Porter was on second. Mike Atkins came to the plate. Then something weird happened. When Clark’s pitcher threw to first Jenkins was caught in a hotbox. Scrambling to tag Jenkins, Clarke’s infield took little note of Porter who was hustling home. Jenkins was tagged out but not before Porter crossed the plate. Score one for Rappahannock.
The lead didn’t last long. In the top of the second inning Porter walked a batter and the next singled. A suc•cessful bunt loaded the bases. With only one out things looked bleak for Rappahannock. The next batter hit a fly to right that sailed foul but was caught by H. B. Wood. The runner on third tagged up and scored. Porter walked another batter, then pitched out of the jam. The inning could have been worse.
Neither pitcher had any trouble in the third inning, both faced only four batters. Porter began to settle down and throw strikes.
