School Board Makes
Land Deal
The Fauquier School Board agreed this week to pay $687,000 for 53.5 acres that will be used for additional sports facilities at Fauquier High School.
The board will sign the contracts for the two parcels next week, said School Board Vice Chairman George Mayhugh, an attorney who negotiated for the property with fellow member Robert Gilliam. On Thursday, the board will meet with the Fauquier Board of Supervisors to determine how to pay for the land.
Additional acreage will be used for needed sports facilities, said School Board Chairman C. Hunter Ritchie. An enlarged cafeteria and parking lot also are proposed improvements at the high school, which sits on a 37-acre site, but “room for recreational facilities is the top priority,” the chairman said.
Subdivision Goes Dry
One of Fauquier County’s most affluent community’s went without water for more than 10 hours last weekend.
On Saturday, water pressure began dropping sharply at the Millwood subdivision east of Warrenton at about 3:30 p.m. By 5 p.m. the 85-home subdivsion was completely without water.
At that point, there wasn’t enough water in the neighborhood “to make a glass of lemonade,” said resident Jon Burleson.
Residents of Millwood experienced a similar interruption of service on Sunday that lasted about four hours.
Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority General Manager Steve Gordon attributed the problem to the indiscriminate use of water by Millwood residents on weekends. Mr. Gordon said he will send letters to the residents encouraging them to “spread out the use of water” throughout the week.
