20th District Chief
Magistrate Appointed
Fran Eldred of Washington, Va., recently was appointed chief magistrate in the 20th Judicial Circuit. She will supervise magistrates in Rappahannock, Fauquier and Loudoun counties.
Eldred succeeds the late Howard Sweeney of Warrenton who died recently.
Magistrates are trained to issue search warrants, arrest warrants, subpoenas and summonses. They also allow bail or commit people to jail and perform various other duties such as providing information on the judicial system.
Magistrates are not connected with law enforcement. They serve as a buffer between law enforcement and society.
