brought the Baldwins back to the U.S. “We primarily came back for the children since neither one spoke English, and I could see them as teenagers not being able to speak English,” Paul said. “That’s fine for there, but not for anywhere else.”
Paul is also the only child of Thomas E. and Bessie Baldwin, and they had only seen him a few times, while on vacation since he left for Vietman. Paul also has another son, Paul Baldwin, Jr., who works for the highway department in Culpeper.
Paul had started his own catering business in addition to his work for the oil company, and they had the opportunity to buy a partnership in a diamond mine. Indonesia had changed, though, with the governments becoming unstable and personal freedom was being lessened.
“American newspapers and magazines were being banned, and that was almost like the government saying, ‘Yanks, go home’,” Paul said. “Indonesia is a developing country, and if you wanted to work for them then it was fine - if not, you got out.”
Paul told Cucie that they would move to the U.S. and try living here for a year to see if the transition in lifestyle and climate could be made. After some difficulties, since Cucie had no papers after the Vietnam War, the Baldwins made it to Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day a year ago.
The family lived with Paul’s parents for a while, and they thought they would retire from any business ventures. “We got tired of all of the daytime soap operas, so we began looking around for something to do,” Paul said.
They were seriously considering a move to North Carolina when they found out that Paul’s cousin, Clarence Baldwin, wanted to sell the Baldwin Grocery Store in Washington. “I walked into the store, and I hadn’t seen Clarence for 25 to 30 years so I had to tell him who I was,” Paul said.
