The entire affair, of course, is far more complicated than this, and both Baliles and Davis have dug in their heels, vowing to fight all the way to the convention floor. In spite of frequent words of conciliation, grimly spoken, the animosity between the two camps is seething. The prospects of a post-convention unification in time to face the GOP common foe appears to be a dim and distant hope.
None of this is to say that if a primary had been held there would have been a live feast between the two contenders. Far from it. It would have been a bitter and expensive struggle.
