Loudoun Commissioner
The search is on to find a replacement for the Loudoun County’s Commissioner of the Revenue, both for an interim appointee and candidates to run in a special election in November.
Plenty of names have been mentioned in Democratic and Republican political circles as possible candidates since the incumbent commissioner, Democrat Lee T. Keyes, announced April 16 that he would resign effective June 30.
Keyes, 66, commissioner since 1972, announced he would resign because he has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He has not yet made a plea to the charge, stemming from a March 30 automobile crash in Leesburg, in which his car collided head-on with a vehicle occupied by two teenaged girls. ,
Keyes, whose office is responsible for property assessments, licenses, state income tax assistance and other duties, will leave office with two-and-ahalf years left in his current four-year term. He will leave office early enough to allow a special election in November.
Loudoun Circuit Court judges will appoint an interim Commissioner of the Revenue to serve from July 1 until the end of the year.On Jan. 1, a new commisioner elected in November during a special election will take over.
