another of a job in different areas, and each area had a different language. “I knew a base of five languages, but then there were different dialects from one place to another," Paul said.

A foreman who could interpret Paul’s orders was essential to the operation. Another essential part of each new operation was to keep the workers working. “I had to work my way in slowly at the beginning of each project because all of the workers would want raises right away when they saw a new boss,” Paul said. “The men would sometimes quit, and if I ever had to fire someone their whole village might show up the next day to threaten me.”

There were other threats to live with in Indonesia, too. “The average life span there is 45 due to things like oil running in the water and very little sanitary conditions,” Paul said. Even though Paul and Cuci boiled their water and used a special rock to purify it even more, Paul contracted hepatitis in Sumatra in 1974.

“It was very close,” Paul said. “The doctors said that I had the worst kind, and that I had gotten it from drinking bad water.” The climate in Indonesia was also a part of life that had to be reckoned with.
