The race had become contentious in the past few weeks, with Mr. Chase accusing Mr. Miller of inaccessibility and unresponsiveness, and Mr. Miller responding that he had been there but had not heard from Mr. Chase. Days before the election, several election-watchers called the race too close to call, and there were rumors of the possibility of an upset win by Mr. Chase.
Mr. Chase had predicted the outcome would hinge on the results from the western counties, and that proved to be the case.The Valley’s population advantage — 60 percent of the district’s voters UVe west of the mountahtt -5 was top big an obstacle for the Culpeper County supervisor1 to overcome and Sen. Miller won reelection with 59 percent of the vote with all but one precinct reporting (as of Wednesday morning). The totals were 20,816 for Sen. Miller and 14,610 for Mr. Chase.
Del. Raymond R. (Andy) Guest Jr. (R-31) was unopposed for reelection to the House of Delegates for a 10th term. He received 1,455 votes in Rappahannock County.
