would say that I was somewhat of a disciplinarian. I’m proud of every one of my children: they were never involved with drugs and had no problems with the police. I like to think that it’s partly due to rigid discipline and learning the difference between right and wrong before they left home,” said Walter. “For example, my son Richard may be 29 years old, but he still abides by the rules of the house when he comes home.”
By instilling the discipline and 'character he learned in the Marine Corps in his children, Walter has helped his youngest son to prepare for boot camp. “Being a former drill instructor, my dad has always stressed the importance of meeting challenges to us,” said Tom. “Boot camp is one challenge I’m looking forward to attacking.”
Tom has nearly a year to wait until that challenge comes around. In the meantime, he is a member of Recruiting Substation, Winchester, Virginia’s Delayed Entry Program. He will continue to learn about the Marine Corps from his recruiter, Sgt. Phillip Parsons, and the other Marines at the recruiting station.
But June 15,1988, Tom will leave for boot camp. After his graduation from Parris Island, he will carry on the Taylor family tradition of Marine Corps service for at least another six years.
