Taylor family’s long-standing record of honorable service to the Corps, most people think Tom’s decision to enlist in the Marine Corps is based on carrying on the family tradition. Not so, says the future Marine.
“A lot of people think I’m joining the Corps because of family tradition, but they’re wrong,” said Tom. “I didn’t want to go to college and I figured the military was a good way to get my act together. Instead of looking for a skill, I guess I’m looking for a better way of doing things; a way to get my life organized.”
“In a way, I guess I felt some pressure to join the Marine Corps, but it’s not like my father said I had to join the Marines. He told me to do what I wanted to do,” said Tom. “I looked at the other services, but the way they dressed and acted wasn’t as impressive as the Marines.”
His father added, “I appreciate Tom’s decision to join the Marine Corps. I think it will be good for him and he’ll be good for the Marine Corps. I’d like to see him get the self-discipline, self-control and physical fitness the Corps has to offer. Plus, it will give him a different perspective on the world we live in, which is not the world according to his peers.”
