The lack of interest is what is disturbing. ' Because waste is no longer something to be buried and forgotten. It’s everybody’s problem, and it’s time that society as a whole, and not just just waste disposal professionals - and those living near a proposed dump - looks at the problem of trash on a continuing basis.
There are alternatives, some of which are too expensive to be considered at this point. But, as with most technology, it promises to become more affordable as more research and development is done. ! Other alternatives, like recycling, require a commitment Ifrom a large segment of the community in order to work. ! It’s not just the residents of Jackson District, especially those who live near the Stover tract, who will be affected by the proposed landfill. Every resident of the county who pays taxes, whether real estate or personal property, will have their bank balances affected by that landfill. ; Likewise, if the Stover property proves to be unsuitable, hnd another location is chosen, the residents of Amissville will htill be affected, even if the physical site is on the other end of the county.
Also, the more input from the community which the JBoard of Supervisors receives, the more likely its decisions |will reflect the wishes of the county’s residents. J There seems to be general agreement that landfilling is hot the best way to dispose of trash. Once the alternatives become technically and economically feasible, choices will pave to be made again. Do we pursue resource recovery? Do Jwe try to do it alone, or do we try again to stimulate interest £n a regional approach? And, once more, all the taxpayers in Jthe county will pay for whatever decision is made. > The Board of Supervisors is charged with making these decisions. But their decisions should be made after hearing the feelings and wishes of their constituents. Not everyone will be happy with the outcome - that’s the nature of democracy. There are always winners and losers. ■ What is seldom realized, however, is that the real losers are those who don’t care enough to express an opinion.
