The Virginia Department of Social Services expects to have approximately $36.7 million for its Fuel Assistance Program this winter. The program is primarily funded by the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Block Grant. The Rappahannock Department of Social Services will accept applications for fuel assistance beginning immediately through Feb. 28, 1988, or until available funds are depleted.
Maximum income levels for the > fuel assistance program are $6,875 for a single person and $14,839 for a four-person household. For more information contact Social Services, 675-3326.
Also, about $1.3 million of the federal grant has been set aside for use in an energy crisis assistance component of the Fuel Assistance Program. Eligible households experiencing heating emergencies may receive up to $500 in energy crisis assistance in addition to fuel assistance.
The program is expected to operate at Approximately the same level this year as during the 1986-87 Program, despite possible cuts in federal binding. This is made possible due to Governor Baliles’ commitment to use overcharge funds to make up anticipated reductions in federal grants of up to $14.9 million.
The following changes have been made in this year’s program:
• Security deposits will not be paid if the program has paid one for the recipient in the past. Deposits are limited to one per lifetime per fuel type.
• In most instances, a co-payment is required for electric bills when electricity is not the primary heating source.
