think the biggest thing I want to get out of boot camp is that sense of accomplishment. All my brothers and two of my friends who are in the Marine Corps now told me that once you go through boot camp, you feel like you can accomplish anything you want. I think I’d like that feeling,” said Tom. UI can tell deep down that it will be one of the best things to ever happen to me. Besides, after weighing the pros and cons, I didn’t figure I’d find a job where I’d get 30 days paid vacation a year, time off with pay when I was sick and free medical and dental care.”
Even with the benefits offered by the Marine Corps, Tom’s mother, Nancy, still has her reservations but respects her son’s decision. “I wanted at least one of the boys to go to college. I worried about all my boys while they were in boot camp,” she said. “Although I don’t want to see him go in, I feel proud to have four sons in the Marines. If they had to join the service, I’m glad it was the Marine Corps. I think it’s the best branch of the service.”
“I don’t think I’ll worry about Tom as much as the others,” said Nancy. “His father has helped to prepare him.”
“I guess the best way to describe my father is that he was always very firm with us kids. While mom was always caring and loving, dad would test us and push us to do our best,” said Tom. “Don’t get me wrong, though. If something ever happened or if there was anything we needed, Dad has always been there when we needed him.”
