Several members of RLEP expressed disappointment that the audience at its recent annual meeting, which featured Department of Waste Management Director Cynthia Bailey, was mainly RLEP members and Amissville residents - those directly affected by the county’s plans for the Stover tract.
While the absence of county officials can perhaps be excused as a wish not to turn an organization’s meeting into a confrontation, we’re sorry to hear that few of the vocal opponents of proposed landfills at several other sites in the county chose to attend.
It appears that, once again, out of sight is out of mind.
Protestations that their opposition “is founded in threats to the public good,” and assurances of “continued interest” seem to have evaporated along with the county’s plans to develop a neighboring piece of property.
That’s a shame. The residents who faced the possibility of a landfill near them in the past, or who have lived near one, ipay be able to offer valuable insights to those in that position nbw. They may be able to allay some fears, perhaps confirm others.
