The annual Fourth of July celebration in Washington, Va. this week promises to be more fun-filled than ever.
The highlight of the day will be, of course, the fireworks at night above the Carrigan’s pond at Avon Hall — the 30th year for the event. The town of Washington has spent about $3,000 on the pyrotechnics this year, according to councilmember Ray Gooch.
The annual events in town associated with the day’s festivities include the Rappahannock Library book sale, ice cream and used goods at Trinity Church, crafters, music, food and drink and children’s games.
Three special events will take place during the day:
• At noon Waldron O’Connor will read from historic American documents in a costume of the colonial period, followed by a performance by the Rappahannock Colonial Dancers.
• Just before the fireworks are lit, William Carrigan will give his annual speech and a ceremony will mark the transfer of the old library, now the Town Hall, from the county’s possession to the town’s.
• Gulf War soldiers and their families will also be recognized during the day.
