Farming with a 1959 John Deere tractor and several accessories like a planter, a discer and a plow, Mr. Martin plants the acreage each spring defying the odds.
He plants early to avoid the heat of summer which also often avoids the need to irrigate. Sometimes, he loses the crop to cold, pests, drought, or wet conditions.
“My philosophy is that if I put it in the ground and the good Lord doesn’t send the right conditions to grow it, then I can do without it,” he said with laughter.
“My family told me I would starve to death,” he said of his family’s first reaction to his planting one » acre. •“I’m
still eating good and so are lots of other people,” he said, adding if he could raise coffee and sugar he would not need to go to a supermarket, as his acreage provides meat and vegetables.
“I just kept adding on an acre each year,” he said with a smile, adding the business is profitable as his regular customers await his truck each week.
