Piedmont's school seat

; The people of Piedmont District are to be congratulated for coming out to express their wishes concerning the vacant School Board seat in their district.

When Dorothy Butler resigned leaving a little more than a year of her term remaining, several people in the district became interested in who would fill that remaining term.

A few weeks ago the four-year terms of Bryant Lee in Hampton District and Paul Nichols in Wakefield District were up for reappointment. No one turned out for the public hearings on those appointments.

We assume the lack of turnout indicated satisfaction with the job these gentlemen are doing on the School Board, but it would have been nice if someone had come to say so.

A year ago, when the School Board seat in StonewallHawthom District was open, no one turned out for the public hearing to recommend a candidate. John Tole was appointed on the recommendation of his supervisor. * We expect Frances Thornton, Piedmont’s new board ipember, to be an excellent addition to the School Board. After Starting as a teacher in the schools, she gave many years of her life in service as the county public health nurse. * After her retirement, she has continued to serve as a volunteer in the elementary school. She knows Rappahannock’s children well. ' Vinnie Carney started the youth soccer program that serves children from all schools. She has also been instrumental in launching the Education Foundation to raise money to directly benefit children in the county’s public schools. I Mrs. Carney’s gracious gesture in bowing to the greater support shown for Mrs. Thornton at the public hearing is to be commended. Perhaps her chance will come later. ; The citizens of Piedmont District are indeed fortunate to have two such qualified candidates for their School Board seat.
