for 12 years and until the business dissolved.

“Anyone with 12 years of service was given retirement,” he said, adding he retired from milk delivery at the early age of 37.

Relaxation and spare time are not the things Mr. Martin has found in retirement.

He works from sun-up to sundown, seven days a week, nine months every year. The three months he is not working in his fields, he overhauls chainsaws, lawnmowers and repairs small engines.

The summer and spring months are the most busy for Mr. Martin.

“I usually start picking by 4:30 a.m.,” he said, adding often before picking he bakes pound cakes to sell with his produce.

The Martin farm is a family business, labor supplied by Martin and his three grown children and wife.

“I just bought my wife a new tractor,” he said, adding while the children help with harvest and bookkeeping, none hope to carry on the thriving agricultural business he has built over the years and he plans retirement from the business in just a few7 years.
